Google Earth should be banned amid suspicions that the online satellite imaging tool was used in planning the attacks that killed more than 170 people in Mumbai last month, an Indian court heard.

The case filed at the Mumbai High Court alleges that Google Earth and similar services, “aid terrorists in plotting attacks” by supplying detailed bird’s-eye images that are used to acquaint militants with their targets.

The British Army is already thought to have taken up the issue with the company. It emerged last year that Iraqi insurgents planning attacks on a British base in Basra had used Google Earth images in which individual buildings inside the camp could be seen clearly.

Google replaced the images with photographs that predated the construction of the base. The Indian authorities do not appear to have cracked down so swiftly. The Internet Watch Foundation had taken exception with a page dedicated to a 1976 album by rock band The Scorpions. The cover of that album--called Virgin Killer--includes the image of a prepubescent girl, which the group deemed a "potentially illegal indecent image," landing Wikipedia on the group's blacklist.

As a result, Internet service providers in the U.K. began filtering access to all pages of the online encyclopedia over the weekend.

The IWF announced in a statement Tuesday that it would reverse that decision after an appeal and presentation by the Wikimedia Foundation, the nonprofit organization that operates Wikipedia.

"The IWF board has today considered these findings and the contextual issues involved in this specific case, and--in the light of the length of time the image has existed and its wide availability--the decision has been taken to remove this Web page from our list," it said.

The group went on to acknowledge that its effort to prevent people from seeing the image actually resulted in the opposite effect, bringing more attention to the album cover worldwide.

"IWF's overriding objective is to minimize the availability of indecent images of children on the internet, however, on this occasion our efforts have had the opposite effect," the watchdog group said. "We regret the unintended consequences for Wikipedia and its users."

Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, who is also handling the finance ministry, has agreed to change the relevant norms under the Income Tax Act, a commerce department official has said. The finance ministry will soon issue a notification changing rules under Section 10AA (7) of the Income Tax Act, which will allow all SEZ units to be treated as separate entities and thus be eligible for 100% tax exemption on profits for the first five years of operation.

NVIDIA unveiled the GeForce GTX 295, and with it reclaimed the overall 3D performance crown from a resurgent AMD. As you may know by now, the dual-GPU powered GeForce GTX 295 features a pair of re-worked GT200 GPUs, manufactured using a more advanced 55nm fabrication process than its 65nm predecessor. Looking at the specifications for the individual GPUs used on the GeForce GTX 295, however, revealed something interesting. You see, the GPUs on the GeForce GTX 295 featured a full complement of 240 shader cores, like the former flagship GTX 280, but they had "only" a 448-bit memory interface. The GeForce GTX 280 had a 512-bit interface.

Recession seems to have started hurting search giant Google. In a statement on its official blog, Google Senior Vice President, Engineering and Research, Alan Eustace said the company was eliminating some engineering jobs at various locations across the world.

Eustace said that Google had been hiring "outstanding engineers in a wide mix of countries. Having offices distributed around the globe is critical to Google's long-term success, and today we have thousands of engineers working in 40 offices in more than 20 countries."

"It has enabled us to make significant improvements in our products and attract more users globally. It has also presented unique challenges. he Indian government is planning to impose a penalty on all GSM operators for not disconnecting mobile services on handsets without a 16-digit International Mobile Equipment Identity (IMEI) number.

The Department of Telecommunications (DoT) has shot off a notice to operators warning about the per-day fine. The DoT said that when a penalty is imposed, it will be doubled up every 15 days until 15 April if the operators fail to follow the DoT's order.

The GSM operators have provided connections to about 25 million Chinese handsets that don't carry the IMEI code. These handsets can be easily tracked. Calls made or received through them can also be intercepted lawfully, showing the provider's details.

The telcos store all their subscribers' numbers in an Equipment Identity Register (EIR) to avoid unauthorised usage of stolen handsets. Some operators haven't yet installed EIRs on their network. The DoT has set a deadline of 15 April for operators to install EIRs.

The telcos feel that subscribers using cheap Chinese phones won't be able to afford buy new phones. But to ensure security, the telcos earlier made an alternative proposal, to install software in non-IMEI numbers.

The GSM lobby, the Cellular Operators Association of India (COAI), has also demonstrated software to security agencies. But IB has found an error in the software which allows anyone to manipulate the genuine IMEI numbers.

Intel has decided to postpone the departure of Lynnfield processors and accompanying chipset, the P55 for August or September. According to the economic situation, it might even Intel is delaying the release of more of these new processors. Initially, these models have been announced for the end of July. This delay was decided to support the manufacturers of motherboards, leaving them with large stocks of motherboards to sell because of reduced demand following the economic crisis.

According to several Taiwanese motherboard manufacturers, Intel's forthcoming Ibex Peak will not only be introduced on the P55 chipset, but will be spanned across five individual mainstream and entry-level chipsets for its 45nm Lynnfield and Havendale processors. which the world's biggest phone maker will preload Skype software into
some of its new smartphones starting from the third quarter of this

has been moving into the mobile arena with deals with operators such

New attacks on IE7

Cybercriminals have begun attacking a critical hole that Microsoft
patched in its Internet Explorer 7 browser last week, corroborating
the company's warning that the vulnerability would be easy to exploit.

The exploit code is spread through a booby trapped Word document that
ultimately installs information-stealing malware on unpatched
machines, according to researchers. The vulnerability is one of two IE
flaws Microsoft patched last week. The company warned at the time that
"consistent exploit code" for the remote execution flaws was likely.

The attack is fairly primitive at the moment, because it involves the
spamming of Word documents. Security experts expect that to change.

"There is absolutely nothing preventing attackers from using the
exploit in a drive-by attack (and we can, unfortunately, expect that
this will happen very soon)," Bojan Zdrnja, a handler at the Sans
Internet Storm Center wrote here. He went on to say the exploit code
was the result of reverse engineering Microsoft's patch.

The exploit code does have its innovations, however. It funnels
pilfered data to a website in China through an encrypted channel, for
instance. It also uses heavily obfuscated shell code and garbage
collection, presumably to cover tracks.

VR-Zone learns that AMD is planning to launch two new mainstream cards
based on 40nm RV740 in May, a month after releasing the high end 55nm
RV790 cards. There will be two versions; Radeon HD 4770 (RV740XT) and
Radeon HD 4750 (RV740PRO).the new cards will be based on a 40nm
graphics processing unit, but will be part of the company's current
HD4000-series. AMD is expected to launch two new models, based on the
same graphics processing unit. The first, which will boast an RV740PRO
GPU, will be equipped with 1GB of GDDR3 memory and will come with a
core clock of 700MHz. This card will be branded as the Radeon HD 4750,
while the one based on the RV740XT GPU will be known as the Radeon HD
4770. This one will also boast a 700MHz GPU, but provide 512MB of
GDDR5 memory, clocked at 800MHz.
The chip is etched to recall, for the first time in 40 nanometers, and
additionally includes calculating 640 units and 32 texture units.The
ATI Radeon HD 4770 would be based on the RV740XT to board 512 MB
memory 128-bit GDDR5 cadencée at 800 MHz. The Radeon HD 4750 based on
a RV740PRO for its part would have 1 GB of GDDR3 memory. These two

market, and plans to start selling servers in competition with old
partners like Hewlett-Packard Co. and IBM Corp.

The servers are part of a package put together by Cisco and partners
like BMC Software and VMware Inc. to harness the power of a recent
technology called "virtualization" that lets one computer act like
several.

San Jose, Calif.-based Cisco is the world's largest maker of computer
networking gear, but Monday's announcement greatly expands its
ambitions in the corporate "data center" market. It's moving from
selling the switches that allow the computers to talk to each other to
selling virtually entire data centers, in conjunction with its
partners.

In a videoconference, Cisco Chief Executive John Chambers emphasized
that its "Unified Computing System" is not an attempt to move into the
commodity server market.

"We have very little interest in the product space," Chambers said.
"We're after: `How does it tie together?'"

Chambers called the unified computing product the biggest step for
Cisco since it added switches to its original router products through
the acquisition of Crescendo Communications Inc. in 1993.

Since then, the company has used the cash generated by its enormously
successful computer networking gear — it had $29.5 billion on hand in
its last quarterly report — to buy up numerous companies, adding
consumer gadgets and cable-TV equipment to its portfolio. This time,
however, it's not diversifying through an acquisition, but by building

SiK introduces the Pimp automobile charger

Accessory vendor SiK has announced the Pimp automobile charger and
audio accessory. The unfortunately-named Pimp—which apparently gets
that name by adding a P to the name of the company's older, similar
Imp accessory—charges your iPod or iPhone from your car's accessory
(cigarette-lighter) jack while providing a 3.5mm audio output for
playing your iPod or iPhone's audio through your car stereo.

The aluminum-and-stainless-steel Pimp connects to your iPod or
iPhone's dock-connector port both to provide power to the player and
to grab the dock-connector port's higher-quality, line-level audio
signal. The accessory includes a three-foot cable and works with both
iPhone models as well as all dockable iPods since the iPod mini. (It
provides power via USB circuitry, so it cannot charge third-generation
and earlier iPods that require power via FireWire circuitry.)
According to SiK, the Pimp includes a replaceable fuse and power
filtering.

The $55 Pimp is currently available for pre-order directly from the
company's Web site, and should be available for purchase from other
vendors "soon."

OLPC to use ARM processors on the XO-2?

The OLPC foundation has hinted that it might be dropping x86
processors in their next generation XO-2 laptops in favor of an ARM
based solution. Apparently the move is aimed at improving battery life
while cutting costs, using a system-on-chip design, but this could
also come at the expense of losing compatibility with Microsoft
Windows operating systems.

"The current XO-1 shows an average consumption of 5 Watts. Many people
believe that it is incredibly low, but we believe it is our main
problem, "said Ed McNierney, technical manager of the project, the
magazine PC World.

All those ARM chip providers should announce their support of the OLPC
XO-2 project and they could start right away showing whatever
prototypes that they have ready running experimentally builds of
different types of embedded Linux be it the upcoming Ubuntu for ARM,
Angstrom Linux or even best running adapted Android Linux
implementations.

Then current market leaders in the Netbook segment can one after the
