McAfee inc. research shows that global recession

McAfee, Inc. today announced findings from its annual cyber security study in which experts warned that the recession is proving a hotbed for fraudulent activity as cybercriminals capitalize on a climate of consumer fear and anxiety. The threat of economic attack is diverting political attentions worldwide and cyber security is not enough of a priority around the globe for real headway to be made against the perpetrators of online crime.

Experts warned that unless significant resources are committed to international efforts to fight malicious cyber activity, there is a risk that cybercrime will impact consumer confidence, further hindering the speed of global recovery in 2009.

The annual McAfee® Virtual Criminology Report examines emerging global cyber security trends, with input from leading academics, criminal lawyers, law enforcement authorities and security experts across the world. This year’s report identified the following challenges:

The Cyber Credit Crunch- cybercriminals are cashing in on consumer anxiety to profit from old-fashioned ‘get rich quick’ scams. People are signing up to add malicious code to websites, lured by the promise of easy money. At the same time, desperate job seekers are being recruited as ‘money mules’ to launder cybercriminal gains under the guise of ‘international sales representatives’ or ‘shipping managers’. With the economic downturn driving more people to the web to seek the best deals, opportunities for cybercriminals to attack are on the rise as people are more easily drawn in.

Indian court asked to ban Google Earth

Google Earth should be banned amid suspicions that the online satellite imaging tool was used in planning the attacks that killed more than 170 people in Mumbai last month, an Indian court heard.

The case filed at the Mumbai High Court alleges that Google Earth and similar services, “aid terrorists in plotting attacks” by supplying detailed bird’s-eye images that are used to acquaint militants with their targets.

The British Army is already thought to have taken up the issue with the company. It emerged last year that Iraqi insurgents planning attacks on a British base in Basra had used Google Earth images in which individual buildings inside the camp could be seen clearly.

Google replaced the images with photographs that predated the construction of the base. The Indian authorities do not appear to have cracked down so swiftly. Yesterday the layout of India’s most important atomic research facility remained accessible on Google despite officials voicing concern more than a year ago.

The Bhabha Atomic Research Centre (BARC), in northeast Mumbai, a city with a population of 18 million, houses at least two nuclear reactors and is regarded as one of India’s highest value targets.

Praful Bidwai, a leading anti-proliferation expert, said: “Fly a plane into BARC and you have a Chernobyl on your hands.”

Last week India increased security at its main airports after credible intelligence that indicated a plan to hijack an airliner to target a highly populated area in a 9/11-type attack.

Wikipedia Ban Reversed Already

Wikipedia functionality has returned for Brits after the country's Internet watchdog reversed its decision to prevent users in that country from visiting a Wikipedia page containing an image of a naked child.

The Internet Watch Foundation had taken exception with a page dedicated to a 1976 album by rock band The Scorpions. The cover of that album--called Virgin Killer--includes the image of a prepubescent girl, which the group deemed a "potentially illegal indecent image," landing Wikipedia on the group's blacklist.

As a result, Internet service providers in the U.K. began filtering access to all pages of the online encyclopedia over the weekend.

The IWF announced in a statement Tuesday that it would reverse that decision after an appeal and presentation by the Wikimedia Foundation, the nonprofit organization that operates Wikipedia.

"The IWF board has today considered these findings and the contextual issues involved in this specific case, and--in the light of the length of time the image has existed and its wide availability--the decision has been taken to remove this Web page from our list," it said.

The group went on to acknowledge that its effort to prevent people from seeing the image actually resulted in the opposite effect, bringing more attention to the album cover worldwide.

"IWF's overriding objective is to minimize the availability of indecent images of children on the internet, however, on this occasion our efforts have had the opposite effect," the watchdog group said. "We regret the unintended consequences for Wikipedia and its users."

Intel Releases Pre-Production Windows 7

Intel Corp. on Wednesday said that it was making pre-production Windows 7 driver for its graphics cores available to original equipment manufacturers as well as software developers. The company appears to be among the first among suppliers of graphics adapters that releases drivers for the next-generation Microsoft Windows 7 operating system.

“Intel is making available for testing its preproduction WDDM1.1 graphics driver, enabling the full Windows 7 experience. The driver is the result of an ongoing collaboration with Microsoft to provide OEMs and developers with drivers that deliver all of the required WDDM1.1 features for Windows 7. As a result of the collaboration, OEMs and beta users can stay in step with Windows 7 prereleases for smooth product development,” a statement at Intel’s web-site reads.

Microsoft Windows 7 operating system is projected to feature very similar driver model as Windows Vista, therefore, it is unlikely to be hard to create Windows 7-compatible drivers. Nevertheless, it is noteworthy that Intel is already making the driver available well ahead of the OS’ launch.

Microsoft have advised both OEMs and developers to start testing of hardware and software with Windows 7 as soon as the system is made available for partners of the world’s largest software company. Microsoft released pre-beta Windows 7 in late October.

Apple’s 3D OS X interface unveiled

Do you know what could resemble a graphical interface of Mac OS in the future? To judge by MacRumors, which has found new patents filed by Apple, it seems in any case, the Cupertino firm has decided to review in depth its operating system. After Spaces and Time Machine, here come the era of 3D interface.

According to the sketch below, Apple would retain the dock as basis Boot applications and three-dimensional size of the latter, rather controversial and introduced in Mac OS 10.5, would be brought to the entire office.

When a window is open, it could be moved to the side walls of the Environment. Also, the organization's general office has been completely redesigned, and each of the five visible interfaces can be configured with specific properties graphics.

"For example, on the underside, icons and other representations of the system can be arranged on a large scale. On the side walls, icons and other representations of the system can be arranged on a small scale; On the wall, icons and other representatives of system objects can be placed under a list. "

Asus plans to launch new "Omega" family

Asustek Computer, which is about to become one of the world’s largest notebook suppliers, reportedly intends to launch a new "Omega" family of notebooks next year. The new products will target entry-level consumers and will virtually complement Asus Eee PC netbooks in the market of affordable mobile personal computers.

Asus Omega notebooks will be priced in the range of NT$20 thousand – NT$30 thousand ($600 - $900), according to a news-story by Chinese-language Apple Daily news-paper (which was partially translated by DigiTimes web-site). Asustek Computer hopes that affordable notebooks will strengthen its positions on the market of personal computers in general.

According to the news-report, Asustek intends to ship eight million Asus Omega machines in 2009.

Asustek has always concentrated on selling high-end notebooks. The company’s plans were surrounded by rumours about the intention to get into the mainstream laptop market, which has relatively low profit margins. But while Asus has succeeded in pushing its very affordable, yet low-performance, Asus Eee PC netbooks into the market, it’s attitude towards mainstream mobile computers has been cold.

Voice Commerce Group Launches VoicePay TV

New Payment Processing Service Provides Opportunity for Broadcasters and Online Businesses to Create Sales and Fully Utilise Video Advertising

Voice Commerce Group, a leader in payment systems, today announces the launch of VoicePay TV , a new payment processing service that enables any product or service to be sold instantly via any TV or IPTV programme.

The system enables businesses that have signed up to the service to place a VoicePay logo, free-phone number and unique VoicePay product code into any video advertisement. When a customer sees an advert showing a product they wish to buy, they call the VoicePay number and authorise the transaction by 'signing' for purchase with their voice. A demonstration of the service is available on voicepay.tv.

Businesses benefit almost immediately as there is a much shorter gap in the purchasing lifecycle between grabbing a customer's attention and selling them the product - they no longer need to rely on the customer to remember their advert or product before visiting the retailer's website at a later date. Businesses can also now see a measurable return on investment from advertising - all incoming calls from customers can be traced back to product codes from exact adverts and locations, allowing businesses to monitor the effectiveness of certain campaigns. The VoicePay network already covers over 50 countries and is fully integrated with the Visa and MasterCard networks.

SANYO Electric Adopts Xilinx Extended

Xilinx K.K. (Art Village Osaki Central Tower 4F, 1-2-2 Osaki, Shinagawa-ku, Tokyo; president Sam Rogan), the Japanese arm of the programmable logic solutions leader Xilinx, Inc., announced today that SANYO Electric Co., Ltd. (2-5-5 Keihanhondori, Moriguchi-shi, Osaka; president Seiichiro Sano; Securities Identification Code: 6764; hereafter "SANYO Electric") has adopted the low-cost Xilinx(R) extended Spartan(R)-3A family for SANYO'S VCC-WD390 next-generation wide dynamic range surveillance cameras. Leveraging the Spartan-3A DSP device, SANYO Electric implemented an image-processing engine featuring proprietary high-performance algorithms, meeting demanding time-to-market and development cost requirements.

In addition to providing finely-tuned image sensing and high resolution imaging, surveillance cameras now must offer wide dynamic range capabilities to clearly capture images in both dark indoor and bright outdoor settings. SANYO Electric's next-generation wide dynamic range VCC-WD390 surveillance camera is designed with such flexibility in mind. With a wide dynamic range CMOS image sensor to provide high-quality images, exceeding charge coupled devices (CCDs), and a proprietary image processing engine, the surveillance cameras are capable of rendering images even closer to the human eye. These cameras debuted September 15 at the American Society for Industrial Security Show 2008 (ASIS 2008) in Atlanta, Georgia.

The Spartan-3A DSP FPGA family provided the functionality and performance required for the next-generation wide dynamic range capabilities offered by the VCC-WD390 surveillance camera. The device's dedicated DSP blocks deliver an average of 70 percent logic efficiency over a gates-plus-multipliers implementation, and functionality that enables ASIC-equivalent performance without requiring an additional co-processor chip. With Spartan-3A DSP FPGAs, SANYO Electric was able to develop original image processing engines with even more cutting-edge algorithms in less time and at lower costs.

Google questions about net neutrality

According to the Wall Street Journal, Google had entered into discussion with major cable operators and mobile operators to obtain U.S. preferential treatment for its own web services. Meanwhile, the Mountain View giant said that could interfere with its manually search algorithm.

Neutrality: access to the network

Do not be evil, this is the leitmotif of Google, yet the Californian firm appears to be poised to waive that rule in several ways. Not satisfied to dominate the market for Internet search, Google is trying now to obtain partnerships with American ISPs to offer an optimized access to its Internet services. This raises the question of network neutrality.

For their part, operators explained that content providers should share the costs of their infrastructure, particularly because of a traffic increase of more than 50% annually. Also, they believe that to address this high bandwidth (especially because of the video streaming) they must find new revenue to update their network. Among these solutions, operators do not monetize quick access to content providers such as Google.

One of the big U.S. cable operators refused to sign such a partnership with Google because it would violate the principles of the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) the neutrality of Internet networks. Interviewed by the Wall Street Journal, a leader of the ISP in question says that such a decision could cause serious legal repercussions "if we had signed, would ravage Washington"

NVIDIA chipsets compatible with AM3

VR-Zone has compiled a table with the original NVIDIA chipsets compatible with the new 45 nm processors AMD socket AM3. It should be noted that not only is the chipset MCP68 (released in mid-2007) although it is an evolution of MCP61 (unveiled in mid-2006) which is compatible with the new AMD.

This means that all cards based on these chipsets should fully support the Phenom II and its derivatives. If your motherboard does not have a proper new BIOS should blame the manufacturer, not the manufacturer or AMD chipset, NVIDIA here.

Internet Explorer hit by a major loophole

Just for once (Ahem), a major security hole was discovered after the traditional monthly Patch Tuesday, which was therefore particularly this month. It affects all versions of Internet Explorer and allows remote code execution, as the installation of malicious software without further intervention from the user visiting a website.

Discovery last week, the flaw was widely exploited, as nearly 6 000 websites were infected Saturday and that number is rapidly increasing, according to security specialist TrendMicro. Microsoft also issued a bulletin alert that the protected mode of IE7 allows you to "limit the impact of vulnerability."

The Redmond firm invites webmasters to prevent SQL injections used to infect them and tries to minimize the number of pending issue a fix within a period not reported, without waiting for monthly updates.

utilize Nvidia Tegra for its upcoming Smartphone

HTC Corp., a leading maker of smartphones and other handsets, is projected to utilize Nvidia Tegra system-on-chip (SoC) for a new cell phone that is due to be out in the second half of 2009. According to an analyst, HTC will not be the only company to utilize Tegra SoC this year.

Nvidia Tegra line of SoCs for handsets and mobile Internet devices (MIDs) was announced in early June, 2008. The product family was not exactly a success for Nvidia: despite of the fact that the company expected handset makers to start adopting Tegra by the end of 2008, it now seems that the first cell phones featuring the SoCs will be out only in the second half of 2009.

Nvidia needs Tegra to boost its revenue and profitability amid global economic slump and rapidly decreasing revenue streams from personal computer core-logic business. Fortunately for the company, there will be more handset makers to adopt Tegra, according to the analyst.

The New Area Of 3D Television

One thing is clear, TV manufacturers need something new to get people buying TVs. Over the last couple of years, TV manufacturers have experienced a sales boom as consumers upgrade to digital TVs in anticipation of the government's mandated switch to digital TV broadcasts in February 2009. Eager shoppers have also been upgrading to high-definition TVs as movie studios, cable and satellite operators, and TV broadcasters have begun offering more programming in HD.

But as the economy worsens, the forecast for the TV market is looking grim. The LCD TV market is only expected to grow about 17 percent in terms of units shipped in 2009, according to research firm DisplaySearch. This is down from growth of about 29 percent in 2008. Plasma TV growth is also expected to suffer with the market only expected to grow by about 5 percent in 2009 compared with a 24 percent rise in 2008, DisplaySearch said.

As a result, TV makers are looking for the next hot thing to attract new consumers. And some are hoping 3D TVs could be it.

At this year's Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas, four of the top selling TV manufacturers--Samsung Electronics, Sony, LG Electronics and Panasonic--showed off their latest versions of 3D TVs. Panasonic set up a mini-home theater where its 103-inch, plasma 3D screen showed clips from New Line Cinema's Journey to the Center of the Earth and Walt Disney Pictures' animated film Bolt. They also showed high-definition 3D footage from NBC's broadcast of the 2008 Summer Olympics in Beijing.

Nvidia GeForce GTX 285

NVIDIA unveiled the GeForce GTX 295, and with it reclaimed the overall 3D performance crown from a resurgent AMD. As you may know by now, the dual-GPU powered GeForce GTX 295 features a pair of re-worked GT200 GPUs, manufactured using a more advanced 55nm fabrication process than its 65nm predecessor. Looking at the specifications for the individual GPUs used on the GeForce GTX 295, however, revealed something interesting. You see, the GPUs on the GeForce GTX 295 featured a full complement of 240 shader cores, like the former flagship GTX 280, but they had "only" a 448-bit memory interface. The GeForce GTX 280 had a 512-bit interface.

The lowest price we could find was for a Zotac card at stock speeds on eBuyer, which cost just £294.99 inc VAT. However, there are also some overclocked cards doing the rounds. For example, Overclockers has a BFG card with a 712MHz core, a 1.62GHz shader clock and 1.332GHz (2,664MHz effective) memory memory available for pre-order, although it's not cheap at £379.49 inc VAT. As standard, the GeForce GTX 285 has a 648MHz core clock, with 1.476GHz stream processors and 1.242GHz (2.484GHz effective) memory, plus a 512-bit memory interface.

Google to close engineering offices

Recession seems to have started hurting search giant Google. In a statement on its official blog, Google Senior Vice President, Engineering and Research, Alan Eustace said the company was eliminating some engineering jobs at various locations across the world.

Eustace said that Google had been hiring "outstanding engineers in a wide mix of countries. Having offices distributed around the globe is critical to Google's long-term success, and today we have thousands of engineers working in 40 offices in more than 20 countries."

"It has enabled us to make significant improvements in our products and attract more users globally. It has also presented unique challenges. The most difficult of these being to coordinate our efforts across all geographies, and provide engineers with significant, meaningful projects that make a real difference to people's lives."

Eustace further said that the company in last September asked engineers in Phoenix, Arizona to move to other offices and now it is "doing the same thing in Austin, Texas; Trondheim, Norway; and Lulea, Sweden.

"Our strong desire is to keep as many of these 70 engineering employees at Google as possible. However, we do recognise the upheaval and heartache that these changes may have on Google families, and that we may not be able to keep 100 per cent of these exceptional employees."

block Non-IMEI number mobile phones

he Indian government is planning to impose a penalty on all GSM operators for not disconnecting mobile services on handsets without a 16-digit International Mobile Equipment Identity (IMEI) number.

The Department of Telecommunications (DoT) has shot off a notice to operators warning about the per-day fine. The DoT said that when a penalty is imposed, it will be doubled up every 15 days until 15 April if the operators fail to follow the DoT's order.

The GSM operators have provided connections to about 25 million Chinese handsets that don't carry the IMEI code. These handsets can be easily tracked. Calls made or received through them can also be intercepted lawfully, showing the provider's details.

The telcos store all their subscribers' numbers in an Equipment Identity Register (EIR) to avoid unauthorised usage of stolen handsets. Some operators haven't yet installed EIRs on their network. The DoT has set a deadline of 15 April for operators to install EIRs.

The telcos feel that subscribers using cheap Chinese phones won't be able to afford buy new phones. But to ensure security, the telcos earlier made an alternative proposal, to install software in non-IMEI numbers.

The GSM lobby, the Cellular Operators Association of India (COAI), has also demonstrated software to security agencies. But IB has found an error in the software which allows anyone to manipulate the genuine IMEI numbers.

Apple interested in NVIDIA Ion?

The hardware platform around which could turn the development of the new Mac mini Apple seems to be Ion NVIDIA, the solution the giant Californian has created for use with Atom processors.

According to a series of indiscretions that bounce on the next generation of Mac mini, therefore, to host an internal integrity chipset NVIDIA 9400M (the same on all existing systems for Apple laptops) and an Intel Atom 330 dual-core solution to 1.6 GHz operating frequency of 533MHz and the FSB.

Apple would have some time to work on this platform: items corridor indicate that the Colossus of Cupertino has received prototypes long before other NVIDIA partners that have expressed interest in Ion.

The use of an Atom processor for a system like the Mac Mini could also buy optical effect in the future: with the launch of Mac OS X 10.6 "Snow Leopard" in the market Apple will have the technology required to exploit the hardware acceleration of the GPU Open through CL. This would offset the performance of the Atom processor and then give way to Apple to create an economic system but still flexible.

The interest in the Apple platform Ion could, however, be quite different mold. The characteristics of the new NVIDIA platform, in fact, appear well reconciled with a device as Apple TV, where the low consumption and low noise operation are key elements that must be reconciled with the ability to manage content in high definition. All tasks that Ion is able to play.

Google decided to abandon the six projects,

Google has decided to abandon several projects. The editor is a real breeding ground for testing new services, but some work better than others. We know that Google regularly launches beta versions which are then tested for at least several months. Some services, like Gmail, have been a real success, but it is not obvious to everyone else.

The publisher therefore abandoned six projects:
  • Google Video
  • Google Catalog Search
  • Google Notebook
  • Dodgeball
  • Jaiku
  • Google Mashup Editor

We understand that Google Video has stopped because the firm has bought YouTube, whose health itself. Google Catalog Search has given rise thereafter to Book Search, but again, the service has not had success. Catalog Search is also closed since yesterday.

Google Notebook, which allowed the taking of notes, will also close its doors, but not immediately. In a first time, users who have already recorded content can still access, but Google stops the active development of this service.

Asustek Computer, a leading maker of computer components as well as mobile computers, has confirmed its intention to introduce an easy-to-use smartphone under its Asus Eee brand. The device will not only be able to serve as a handset, but will also be able to control other Asus devices.

According to Jonney Shih, the chairman of Asustek Computer, personal computers will become not only a part of daily routine, but will go into virtually any device or item. In order to control all of those devices, one product will be needed, says Mr. Shih in an interview with the New York Times news-paper. In fact, that device is in the development: the low-cost Asus Eee smartphone.

"That Eee phone may become an interactive control. The whole digital network is the key," claims Mr. Shih.

Unfortunately, the chairman of Asustek did not real any details regarding the Eee Phone besides the fact that the device is currently being designed and will have capabilities to control other devices, which naturally points to support of wireless technologies, such as Bluetooth.

offer Web Callback application with DACX Ameyo

Drishti-Soft Solutions, a leading provider of Communications solutions, has announced that it will now provide Web Callback feature with its All-in-One Communications Suite- DACX Ameyo, to Enterprises to help them increase their conversion rates through the Internet. This application will be provided to businesses on request basis.

Research has shown that customers prefer telephonic interactions over email interactions; they would not prefer putting time and efforts into contacting the customer care agent directly. Bill Gates has rightly said recently- "In the future there will not be any significant websites that do not contain the Call Me Now capability. The question is- How significant do you want your web site to be?"

When an online visitor clicks on the web callback widget and leaves his details (name, address, phone number etc.), the system immediately initiates a callback to the web-visitor with a screen pop containing the relevant details and connects him/her to the call center. This is a more proactive method to reach out to potential customers.

Video Game Sales Top $21B in 2008

ll throughout 2008, as the economy went from bad to worse, video games continued to sell at record levels, boosted by the popularity of the Nintendo Wii and blockbuster games like "Grand Theft Auto IV."

Still, there are some signs that the recession is nipping at the heels of video games. The priciest console, Sony Corp.'s PlayStation 3, continues to lag behind its less expensive rivals, the Wii and Microsoft Corp.'s Xbox 360.

According to data from market researcher NPD Group, Americans bought $21.33 billion worth of video game systems, software and accessories last year. This is a big jump from the previous year's roughly $18 billion, but slightly below the $22 billion that NPD had estimated as late as November.

The Wii console's motion-sensing controls allow Wii Music users at any experience level to step up and jam, whether playing solo or as part of a group. Using the wireless Wii Remote and Nunchuk controllers, players make simple, intuitive movements to strum a guitar, play a trumpet or bang a drum.

Lynnfield CPU and P55 chipset delayed by Intel

Intel has decided to postpone the departure of Lynnfield processors and accompanying chipset, the P55 for August or September. According to the economic situation, it might even Intel is delaying the release of more of these new processors. Initially, these models have been announced for the end of July. This delay was decided to support the manufacturers of motherboards, leaving them with large stocks of motherboards to sell because of reduced demand following the economic crisis.

Lynnfield and P55 were both set to launch by the end of July, but according to the Taiwanese motherboard makers, delays will now almost certainly ensue due to an Intel inventory glut and, surprise, surprise, the credit crunch.

Remember, the Lynnfield are declensions midrange Nehalem and use the LGA-1056 socket. After the release of Intel P55 chipset, the Santa Clara giant will retire chipsets P45 and P43 and slip the other chipsets in the series 4 to the future. Note that the first Havendale ES (engineered sample) will be sent to manufacturers of motherboards in February.

Intel's Ibex Peak is P55, H55,

According to several Taiwanese motherboard manufacturers, Intel's forthcoming Ibex Peak will not only be introduced on the P55 chipset, but will be spanned across five individual mainstream and entry-level chipsets for its 45nm Lynnfield and Havendale processors. The entire lineup will include the mainstream P55 and H55 as well as the high-end H57, P57, and Q57 which will all launch in Q1 2010 while the P55 exclusively launches in Q3 later this year.

One of the major highlights of the three high-end chipsets will be the introduction of a new technology known as Braidwood. In short terms, it is basically a revision of Intel's Turbo Memory which was first seen on the Santa Rosa mobile Centrino platform in May 2007 and later in its second revision on the Montevina platform in July 2008.

The technology attempts to decrease hard drive usage by moving frequently accessed data over to flash memory which ultimately allows for faster boot times and more power efficiency. This time, however, the memory chips will also feature a dedicated NVRAM controller to the system and storage buffers to allow for read and write speeds available only on solid state disks.

Skype Software along with Nokia

Internet calling company Skype has secured a deal with Nokia under
which the world's biggest phone maker will preload Skype software into
some of its new smartphones starting from the third quarter of this
year.

Skype, whose technology has allowed legions of consumers to make
practically free long-distance calls over the Internet on fixed lines,
has been moving into the mobile arena with deals with operators such
as Hutchison Whampoa's 3.

"We believe that mobile is incredibly important to our future," Skype
Chief Executive Josh Silverman told Reuters in an interview at the
Mobile World Congress in Barcelona, the industry's biggest gathering.

Skype software is also available to download onto mobile phones after
they have been bought, but is then less integrated into features like
address books, making it less convenient.

Most mobile operators are wary of Skype, fearing they will lose
revenue through consumers paying little or nothing for calls, but
Silverman said 3 had actually seen its average revenue rise by 20
percent for consumers using Skype phones.

Gemalto's SIMessenger enables users to easily keep in touch with their
Windows Live Messenger contacts from their mobile phone. SIMessenger
offers an intuitive menu that allows subscribers to access their
Windows Live Messenger environment with an experience similar to what
they get when accessing it from a PC. SIMessenger also automatically
launches when they switch their handset on, so they can start chatting
immediately.

SIMessenger's user-friendly interface enables quick and easy
navigation, so that users retrieve the messaging service they are
familiar with while on the move. To date, three operators have
successfully deployed SIMessenger: Oi in Brazil, Personal S.A. in
Argentina and Movistar in Peru. Gemalto has already delivered close to
5 million SIM cards embedding the Windows Live instant messaging
application.

"Through our alliance with Gemalto, we are able to greatly expand the
reach of the Windows Live Messenger experience on mobile to new
markets and more consumers," said Tom Bailey, senior director of
product management for Windows Live for Mobile services. "SIMessenger
will enable the masses to easily use the popular Windows Live
Messenger to communicate with the people they care about while on the
go."

69 really useful OS X timesavers

Apple has always put the user first when it comes to designing
operating systems, building environments that help you in your
everyday computing life rather than making you work around their
limitations.

One result of this has been that Mac OS X has grown to become a highly
capable and multi-layered entity, with many tools and features hidden
just below the surface, which can make your everyday Mac use quicker
and easier.

There are also a number of third-party applications that can help you
to save time when performing any number of tasks. These range from
simple solutions, like speeding up searching for files or connecting
to other Macs, to more advanced features like remote controlling Macs
without leaving your seat and understanding iMovie's export options to
minimise render times.

The whole ethos of Apple products is to get things done more quickly
and elegantly, and with our guide to 101 essential Mac timesavers
you'll get the best out of your Mac, iPod or iPhone and learn some
great timesaving tricks as well.

Timesavers for everyday Mac use

1. Save time sending files
If you have a group of files or folders that you need to transfer by
email, FTP or over iChat, rather than adding them individually
multiple-select them and choose File > Create Archive in 10.4 or
Compress in 10.5. The resulting zip file will contain all the items
and can be added with a single drag and drop.

2. Find files faster
Select File > New Smart Folder and enter criteria for the kinds of
files the folder should keep track of. For example, 'all images opened
this month', making it quicker to find what you want.

3. Save time turning your Mac on and off
In System Preferences > Energy Saver > Schedule, set a regular time
for your Mac to boot up and shut down. For example, you can tell the
schedule to start up your Mac just before you start work.

New attacks on IE7

Cybercriminals have begun attacking a critical hole that Microsoft
patched in its Internet Explorer 7 browser last week, corroborating
the company's warning that the vulnerability would be easy to exploit.

The exploit code is spread through a booby trapped Word document that
ultimately installs information-stealing malware on unpatched
machines, according to researchers. The vulnerability is one of two IE
flaws Microsoft patched last week. The company warned at the time that
"consistent exploit code" for the remote execution flaws was likely.

The attack is fairly primitive at the moment, because it involves the
spamming of Word documents. Security experts expect that to change.

"There is absolutely nothing preventing attackers from using the
exploit in a drive-by attack (and we can, unfortunately, expect that
this will happen very soon)," Bojan Zdrnja, a handler at the Sans
Internet Storm Center wrote here. He went on to say the exploit code
was the result of reverse engineering Microsoft's patch.

The exploit code does have its innovations, however. It funnels
pilfered data to a website in China through an encrypted channel, for
instance. It also uses heavily obfuscated shell code and garbage
collection, presumably to cover tracks.

Sun Establishes First Open Source Standard

Sun Microsystems today announced the release of the world's first
generic communication protocol between a Key Manager and an encrypting
device into an open source community. This latest effort in the Open
Storage initiative gives customers greater choice, value and
flexibility through the resources in open source communities, like the
growing Storage community within OpenSolaris. Today's announcement
sets Sun apart and enables partners to adopt this protocol to securely
handle encryption keys without additional licensing. The protocol is
implemented as a complete toolkit and is downloadable from the
OpenSolaris website

Governments, finance, healthcare, retail and other vertical markets
need to comply with current regulatory laws that create mandates to
protect sensitive stored data. To support these requirements, this
protocol is available to customers using the Sun StorageTek KMS 2.0
Key Manager and Sun StorageTek T9840D, T10000A, T10000B Enterprise
Drives, as well as Sun StorageTek HP LTO4 drives shipped in Sun
libraries. A number of additional partners are developing products
based on this protocol, including EMC, whose RSA security division has
talked about releasing it as an option on their RKM Key Manager.

"Open Storage solutions allows customers to break free from the chains
of proprietary hardware and software and this new protocol extends
this lifeline into the expensive and highly fragmented encryption
market," said Jason Schaffer, senior director, storage product
management, Sun Microsystems, Inc. "Open source equals customer value
for encryption solutions and Sun now offers the only solution on the
market that works across multiple vendors and suppliers."

AMD RV740 is Radeon HD 4770 / 4750,

VR-Zone learns that AMD is planning to launch two new mainstream cards
based on 40nm RV740 in May, a month after releasing the high end 55nm
RV790 cards. There will be two versions; Radeon HD 4770 (RV740XT) and
Radeon HD 4750 (RV740PRO).the new cards will be based on a 40nm
graphics processing unit, but will be part of the company's current
HD4000-series. AMD is expected to launch two new models, based on the
same graphics processing unit. The first, which will boast an RV740PRO
GPU, will be equipped with 1GB of GDDR3 memory and will come with a
core clock of 700MHz. This card will be branded as the Radeon HD 4750,
while the one based on the RV740XT GPU will be known as the Radeon HD
4770. This one will also boast a 700MHz GPU, but provide 512MB of
GDDR5 memory, clocked at 800MHz.
The chip is etched to recall, for the first time in 40 nanometers, and
additionally includes calculating 640 units and 32 texture units. The
ATI Radeon HD 4770 would be based on the RV740XT to board 512 MB
memory 128-bit GDDR5 cadencée at 800 MHz. The Radeon HD 4750 based on
a RV740PRO for its part would have 1 GB of GDDR3 memory. These two
cards benefit for the first time a three-phase supply of energy saving
and a GPU running at 700 MHz.

The GeForce GTS 250, which is nothing more than a simple GeForce 9800
GTX + fame, will be launched on March 3, the opening day of CeBIT. The
selling price of this card would be an opportunity down, we are
talking about $ 130. The GeForce GTS 240 would be much the same as the
GeForce 9800 GT, but little novelty, the frequencies would be boosted
to 675 MHz for the GPU, 1688 MHz for calculation units and 2200 MHz
for memory (instead of 600, 1500 and 1800 Mhz).

Transcend new 16GB SDHC HD video cards

Transcend Information, Inc. (Transcend), one of the world's largest
producers of flash memory cards, today announced the arrival of its
newest memory card series –SDHC HD Video Cards, designed specifically
for recording, storing, and playing back high definition video
content.

Today's latest camcorders record digital video at extremely high
resolutions without compromising image quality. However, the improved
clarity of HD video requires a significantly greater amount of storage
space when recording. Transcend's SDHC HD Video Cards are fully
equipped to handle the increased capacity, speed, and reliability
requirements of HD video. When recording in high quality 1920x1080
AVCHD format at 13Mbps compression rate, a 16GB Transcend SDHC HD
Video Card can store 2 hours and 40 minutes of video content.
Moreover, if slightly lower quality settings are used, the same 16GB
card can record up to six full hours of high definition video! For
added convenience, the front of each Transcend SDHC HD Video card
features a useful space for labeling and organizing recorded video
content.

Transcend's SDHC HD Video Cards are also fully Class 6 compliant,
which means they provide extremely fast data transfer speeds
(guaranteed minimum write speed of 6MB/s) to assure quick reaction
time when used in digital cameras and camcorders. Modern 10 megapixel
digital cameras and HD camcorders continuously save large amounts of
high-resolution image data to the memory card during use, and the
speed at which cameras can save this information directly affects its
performance. Transcend's high-speed Class 6 SDHC HD Video Cards cater
directly to digital camera and HD camcorder users by allowing faster
image and video saving for improved overall camera response. Now
available in 4GB, 8GB, and 16GB capacities, Transcend's SDHC HD Video
Cards are fully backed by Transcend's comprehensive Lifetime Warranty.

Cisco introduces its first Servers

Cisco Systems Inc. wants a bigger chunk of the corporate computing
market, and plans to start selling servers in competition with old
partners like Hewlett-Packard Co. and IBM Corp.

The servers are part of a package put together by Cisco and partners
like BMC Software and VMware Inc. to harness the power of a recent
technology called "virtualization" that lets one computer act like
several.

San Jose, Calif.-based Cisco is the world's largest maker of computer
networking gear, but Monday's announcement greatly expands its
ambitions in the corporate "data center" market. It's moving from
selling the switches that allow the computers to talk to each other to
selling virtually entire data centers, in conjunction with its
partners.

In a videoconference, Cisco Chief Executive John Chambers emphasized
that its "Unified Computing System" is not an attempt to move into the
commodity server market.

"We have very little interest in the product space," Chambers said.
"We're after: `How does it tie together?'"

Chambers called the unified computing product the biggest step for
Cisco since it added switches to its original router products through
the acquisition of Crescendo Communications Inc. in 1993.

Since then, the company has used the cash generated by its enormously
successful computer networking gear — it had $29.5 billion on hand in
its last quarterly report — to buy up numerous companies, adding
consumer gadgets and cable-TV equipment to its portfolio. This time,
however, it's not diversifying through an acquisition, but by building
its own products.

IDC analyst Michelle Bailey said Cisco isn't trying to take on HP and
IBM in the broader market for servers, but rather is focusing on a
certain set of very large customers. Their data centers, for instance,
keep track of customer accounts, run large Web sites or deliver movies
to PCs or cell phones. That's a $20 billion business annually.

Flying Mac released FarFinder iPhone client

Flying Mac has announced the release of FarFinder for iPhone, the
native iPhone client for their Macintosh remote access product.
FarFinder lets iPhone users browse, view and download their Mac's
files from anywhere. FarFinder also provides access to a Mac's files
from any web browser on any platform - OS X, Windows or Linux.

Features:

FarFinder for iPhone gives users secure access to any Mac running
FarFinder's Mac software. Users have access to the Mac's complete file
system, including connected network drives such as Apple's Time
Capsule.
Users can view all documents the iPhone supports, including iWork
files, Microsoft Office documents and PDFs, with additional support
for RTF, RTFD and web archives. A slideshow function provides easy
image viewing, and can display image files such as Photoshop which the
iPhone would not normally handle. The iPhone can stream music and even
video from the Mac if bandwidth allows.
FarFinder provides a Mac-like experience, with Finder-style icon
and list views, custom file icons (where not forbidden by Apple) and
quick access to Finder sidebar items. Spotlight is also available,
allowing the user to easily search the whole Mac. Advanced features
include displaying hidden files, showing file extensions and opening
packages.
Files and whole folders can be downloaded to the iPhone for times
when there is no network available, and for easy access to
frequently-used documents and large media files.
Additional features include sending files and folders by email
without needing to download them first, and the ability to look
through the remote Mac's iSight camera. This latter feature is
particularly popular with users.
FarFinder for iPhone replaces FarFinder's Mobile Safari interface,
which gave iPhone users access to a subset of the features described
above. The native application delivers not only additional features,
but also a huge performance and usability increase.

SiK introduces the Pimp automobile charger

Accessory vendor SiK has announced the Pimp automobile charger and
audio accessory. The unfortunately-named Pimp—which apparently gets
that name by adding a P to the name of the company's older, similar
Imp accessory—charges your iPod or iPhone from your car's accessory
(cigarette-lighter) jack while providing a 3.5mm audio output for
playing your iPod or iPhone's audio through your car stereo.

The aluminum-and-stainless-steel Pimp connects to your iPod or
iPhone's dock-connector port both to provide power to the player and
to grab the dock-connector port's higher-quality, line-level audio
signal. The accessory includes a three-foot cable and works with both
iPhone models as well as all dockable iPods since the iPod mini. (It
provides power via USB circuitry, so it cannot charge third-generation
and earlier iPods that require power via FireWire circuitry.)
According to SiK, the Pimp includes a replaceable fuse and power
filtering.

The $55 Pimp is currently available for pre-order directly from the
company's Web site, and should be available for purchase from other
vendors "soon."

OLPC to use ARM processors on the XO-2?

The OLPC foundation has hinted that it might be dropping x86
processors in their next generation XO-2 laptops in favor of an ARM
based solution. Apparently the move is aimed at improving battery life
while cutting costs, using a system-on-chip design, but this could
also come at the expense of losing compatibility with Microsoft
Windows operating systems.

"The current XO-1 shows an average consumption of 5 Watts. Many people
believe that it is incredibly low, but we believe it is our main
problem, "said Ed McNierney, technical manager of the project, the
magazine PC World.

All those ARM chip providers should announce their support of the OLPC
XO-2 project and they could start right away showing whatever
prototypes that they have ready running experimentally builds of
different types of embedded Linux be it the upcoming Ubuntu for ARM,
Angstrom Linux or even best running adapted Android Linux
implementations.

Then current market leaders in the Netbook segment can one after the
other announce that they too will be ready to be part of the ARM
paradigm change. Whoever of an interchangeable mix among Asus, MSI,
Acer, Gigabyte, Hasee, Quanta and the other giants need to come
forward and confirm that yes, they do have working prototypes of the
ARM laptops using some of the different available options and that
they will be interested to use XO-2 technologies as soon as possible.

Download Pre-Alpha Chrome browser available

On 2 September, when Google unveiled its browser Chrome with a
JavaScript engine fast, much regretted that the software is developed
for the Windows system. However, last January we learned that the
versions for Mac OS X and Linux were being developed and should be
revealed in the first half of this year.

Last January, Brian Rakowski, Product management at Google, confirmed
this information and added that these versions were "not capable of
displaying web pages correctly. But it is still very rudimentary in
terms of user experience."

A few weeks ago, the first screenshot of the version for Mac OS X runs
on the Web and now we learn that the developers of the project
Chromium just to provide a pre-alpha version for Linux and more
specifically the Ubuntu system. Preliminary tests performed SunSpider
JavaScript, including by Tombuntu magazine, Chrome would be 4.7 times
faster than Firefox 3 and 2.9 times faster than Firefox 3.1 beta 3.

For more information, to follow the installation process go here.

The package also includes the monitor with 3D shutter glasses and IR emitter integrated active.

Nokia X7 – 00 release date and specification

Nokia seems pretty hot roast in the oven to have a whole! In a Czech forum now are pictures of a new smartphone appeared the Finnish manufacturer and you marvel: The sharp photos show clearly more than just a prototype or a processed bad fake. The forum will present even a video of someone playing Need for speed on the new device. According to insiders, it is expected it to the new X7-00 act to this - we wonder, really - despite a lot of technology, according to numbering one level below the published a few weeks ago N8.

Apple iPad 2 will initially only produced by Foxconn

Remains to be seen whether or not the latest at a furious as expected launch of the iPad 2 not ODMs such as Quanta Computer will enter production in the. Quanta is the top producer for Apple's notebook line of Macbooks and Quanta, according to insider rumors, even the benches set up for Apple's iPad second. The trade journal Digitimes reports that the contract manufacturer Foxconn the next iPad 100 days could deliver from within. This had found the page by queries with suppliers. The production of the current iPad will still probably continue until the end of February. The period in spring 2011 is not surprising and was always so far as iPad vague date for the performance or even the launch of the next. The first generation of the iPad was introduced in January 2010, from April, it was then - first in the USA - to buy.

Samsung unveils i-Functional NX11 mirror less camera

It left for 2011! Samsung is the first to draw, with its first ad of cameras next year. The NX11 NX10 takes over from him and adds support for the objectives IFN. Launched a year ago after a long wait, the NX10 , first compact interchangeable lens Samsung was much impressed by its ease of use. Then, the compact NX100 had made a very significant innovation: the medium of IFN key objectives, to reassign the left hand some common functions and thus offer a possibility of quick and convenient settings. The new NX11 is a narrow updating the NX10. The camera itself changes little - for example we find the excellent AMOLED screen and electronic viewfinder comfortable VGA, or even the 14MP CMOS sensor - and remains, for example limited to 720p HD video. The main novelty is in fact compatible with the key objectives of the new updating of 18-55 mm, whose version of the switch II lost stability (if one wants to manage, will go through the camera menus), replaced by the famous key IFN. As for the WB700 presented simultaneously, we do not yet have complete data sheet or information on distribution, but the sites of the Atlantic talk of a price of around $ 650, a rate fairly close to the current kit 18-55 mm + NX10 first version.
