Asustek Computer, which is about to become one of the world’s largest notebook suppliers, reportedly intends to launch a new "Omega" family of notebooks next year. The new products will target entry-level consumers and will virtually complement Asus Eee PC netbooks in the market of affordable mobile personal computers.
Asus Omega notebooks will be priced in the range of NT$20 thousand – NT$30 thousand ($600 - $900), according to a news-story by Chinese-language Apple Daily news-paper (which was partially translated by DigiTimes web-site). Asustek Computer hopes that affordable notebooks will strengthen its positions on the market of personal computers in general.
According to the news-report, Asustek intends to ship eight million Asus Omega machines in 2009.
Asustek has always concentrated on selling high-end notebooks. The company’s plans were surrounded by rumours about the intention to get into the mainstream laptop market, which has relatively low profit margins. But while Asus has succeeded in pushing its very affordable, yet low-performance, Asus Eee PC netbooks into the market, it’s attitude towards mainstream mobile computers has been cold.
